In brief: Black Diamond refers to a dark DLC surface finish on selected SARACEN knives. The surface coating is not the same as the steel inside the blade or its HRC hardness. For each model, distinguish between the knife shape, the Standard variant, and the Black Diamond variant.
What is DLC
The abbreviation means diamond-like carbon. It refers to a group of carbon coatings, not a blade made of diamond. They are generally used for surface properties such as wear resistance and friction; the specific result depends on the coating's composition and application.
For Black Diamond, SARACEN specifies a dark DLC finish and lower friction. However, without a test report, it is not possible to promise a specific percentage improvement in cutting performance, an exact coating thickness, or a service life.
What the coating does not replace
| DLC coating | What does not follow from it alone |
|---|---|
| It changes the surface and appearance. | It does not determine the cutting edge geometry itself. |
| It may affect surface durability and friction. | It does not guarantee that no food will stick. |
| It is part of a specific variant. | It does not mean that all Eclipse models have a black finish. |
| It is not the same as the core steel. | The coating's hardness cannot simply be added to the blade's HRC rating. |

Standard and Black Diamond in the current selection
Original comes in Standard variants of 220, 245, and 265 mm; the Black Diamond option is available in 220 and 245 mm. Eclipse comes in Standard variants of 220 and 240 mm, and Black Diamond variants of 220 and 269 mm. The loaded selection lists PRO in 175 and 218 mm variants, without a Black Diamond designation.
Variants may change. Check availability and exact specifications for Original and Eclipse.
Washing, Storage, and Sharpening
Follow the manufacturer's instructions: hand-wash, dry, and protect from impacts. The coating does not mean the knife is dishwasher-safe or can be stored loosely among cutlery. Sharpening removes material at the cutting edge, so assess the appearance of the blade face and the condition of the edge separately.
If the surface is damaged or you are considering having it restored, first contact SARACEN support. We make no promises here about home application or the availability of a recoating service.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Every Eclipse Black Diamond?
No. Eclipse is a model range, while Standard and Black Diamond refer to the available finish options.
Does DLC Mean Higher Steel HRC?
No. Blade HRC and the properties of a thin coating are different specifications.
Does Black Diamond Have to Be Sharper Than Standard?
The coating name alone does not guarantee this. Sharpness depends primarily on the geometry and sharpening of the cutting edge.
